Declaration of the Ashnola sməlqmíx Protected and Conserved Area
nʔaysnúlaʔxʷ (Ashnola), Keremeos, BC, sməlqmíx / syilx Territory – On Thursday, April 28, 2022, the sməlqmíx, the syilx people of the Similkameen Valley will announce the designation of a new Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) in their territory. The Ashnola IPCA Declaration upholds the inherent jurisdiction and responsibility of the sməlqmíx to protect and manage their territories according to sməlqmíx / syilx law.
Members of the media are invited to witness the declaration ceremony at Snaʕsnulax̌ʷ Arbour, Ashnola Pow-wow Grounds, with a press conference and media availability to follow.
